MS Multimedia Skills | MS Academics | Middle School | The American School in Japan

One of the requirements for Multimedia Skills is that each student must take pictures at one of the Dance/Socials in the Middle School. When taking pictures:

  • Don't surprise people with the camera.  In particular, don't take a picture of a couple dancing unless they know they are going to be photographed and agree to it. Please don't interrupt couples who are dancing unless you know them and know they won't mind. (After all, if you had been waiting three months for the dance with that special someone, the last thing you want is somebody interrupting it with a camera, right?)
  • Group photos are better than a photo of a single person unless there is something unusual or compelling about the photograph. (No, a picture of your friend is not unusual or compelling).
  • Take pictures of the social action. These are dance/socials, not just dances. Make sure you get pictures of everything going on, including games, ping pong, watching TV, basketball, eating, and so forth.
  • Action photographs can be fun and give a different view on the social. They are hard to take, so try to use various camera settings to see the result.
  • Compose the picture. Make sure that the frame is filled with your subject and avoid having too much empty space top or bottom.
  • Take pictures of people you don't know. Take pictures of people you may not know, particularly the sixth graders since none are in this course.
  • Have fun and take lots of pictures. The important thing is have fun while your are taking the pictures.
