The following resources have images that are more likely to be public domain or have a copyright licenses that have reasonable restrictions. Please follow the licensing rules in each page.  (See the Copyright page for more information about copyright and how to obtain permission to use an image.)

Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) Index
The astronomy picture of the day has a wonderful photos and illustrations. Work that is credited to a government organization (such as NASA) is usually public domain. Work credited to individuals or non-government funded projects most likely needs permission to use.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Central Library - Photo Collection  
This site has photos of weather and just about everything to do with weather observation, including photos of the equipment (including ships and planes) used. The same notes as on the APOD site applies.
ditto.com
Ditto.com bills itself as the premier visual search engine. It does have lots of connections, but you still need to determine copyright restrictions.
Images in the Public Domain
This site has images in the public domain as they are taken from a 1911 publication of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary.
Animation Factory
The animated GIF aficionado will love this site, but don't get carried away by using lots of them on your web pages! It will drive your audience to distraction.
The Icon Log
If you like icons, this is the place to find them.

About.com

The following links are to various part of the About.com site, either to the Web Clip Art or Desktop Publishing Areas. Each of these provides more links to collections that are likely to be free, not public domain, so still be aware of potential copyright restrictions. This site is about three years old so it does not necessarily have the best links.

Library of Congress

Library of Congress Civil War pictures
The Library of Congress has many Civil War pictures available for download through their web site. These are all public domain as the copyright has expired.
Library of Congress Prints and Photographs On-line Catalog
The Library of Congress has many other images available, and they can be accessed through this on-line catalog. However, read the investigating rights section before browsing the pictures as you are still responsible for determining copyright before using any images.

Search Engines

As with most Internet search engines, you will find a broad range of images. You must check the copyright status for each image you wish to use.

U.S. County Outline Maps
The University of Texas brings you maps drawn by the folks at the U.S. Census Office.
Internet Medieval Sourcebook of Maps and Images
The sourcebook contains just what it says it does. However, be aware of copyright—some of the maps are copyrighted as they were recently created.

ART

Mark Harden's Artchive
The Artchive can be confusing to navigate and you must check the copyright information for images from 1927 on, but it does have a nice collection of fine art.
Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco Thinker Image Base
Need fine art pictures? You can find pictures of the originals here.
Images from Vatican
This is a difficult site to read because of their choice of fonts and mixture of languages, but if you need photos of the artwork of the Holy See, this site can be very rewarding.
The Getty Museum
If you like their collections, you'll love their pictures.
Pics for Learning
Photographers, students, teachers, and others have donated their images so that they may be used. The site advertises itself as "copyright friendly".
Classroom Clipart
These pictures have been donated, but the original copyrights are retained by the author so you must follow their guidelines. In short, these are useable on school projects or in student or school web pages. Beyond that, you will need to contact the copyright owner for permission.
Discovery School Clip Art Gallery
Royalty-free if you follow their requirements.
Medieval Clip Art
These are royalty free, but do acknowledge where you got them.
Nobel Foundation Plant Gallery
You need permission to use their images, but it's included here because they seem to have photographs of most plants that you would find in Southwestern Oklahoma.
