Learn FrontPage

Learning Front Page

Your first major assignment is to learn FrontPage. You will:

  • Open your web site in the server.
  • Follow a tutorial to learn the basics of developing a FrontPage website.

Because we are also focusing on our Student Learning Outcomes, you need to be aware of those. You can be a constructive community member by helping others with their questions. You can be a self-directed, productive learner by trying to understand before asking questions and by using the help file. Think about what it means to be creative thinker and problem solver as well. Remember, those error messages are for you.

Helping Each Other

Because it is important to help each other, please enter questions on the FrontPage Questions and Help page in the CoWeb, but read about asking questions. Check this page often. If you can answer a person, please add your answer.

Open Your Web

Your web URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is http://discussion.asij.ac.jp/ms/class/exp/s04/period. For example, John Doe who has has Explorations on A day, period 5 would have his web at http://discussion.asij.ac.jp/ms/class/exp/s04/a5/.

The procedure below will allow you to open your web from school as well as from home if you have FrontPage there.

In FrontPage,

  • go to File==>Open Web,
  • select Web Folders or My Network Places,
  • create a new folder,
  • If asked, select the button for an existing network place
  • then put in http://discussion.asij.ac.jp/ms/class/exp/s04/period/ as the location.
  • Enter your username and password.

Please create a folder (right-click in the folder list and select New==>folder) in the web site and give it your username. Save all of your work in that folder.

Follow the Tutorial

If you have a question, start by looking in the help file by selecting Help from the menu or pressing the F1 key. There are several tutorials on the web, but one of the easiest to read for Middle School students is the actDEN tutorial. Open the tutorial and follow the basics. Although you may depart from the tutorial to explore FrontPage, your are not done until you have a form on your web site that people can fill in and that you can see what they write.

If you would like to try FrontPage on your own, import a small JPEG file (it must be less than 100kb) into your web site and place it in the page. Thumbnail it (gee, try searching for Thumbnail in the help file) and save the page. You can then create a hot spot (see the help file) and hyperlink (see the help file) if you wish.

Helpful hints

  • When in doubt, press F5. It refreshes the view. It will become your friend.
  • Control-z is also your friend, it can undo page edits.
  • Always import files into your web site. If you don't see the file in your folder list, it will not show up on the web. But press F5 if you don't see it.
  • If you can't see your folders, click the toggle pane button as shown on the right. Oh, and press F5.
  • You may view your web from any browser in the world by entering it's URL, then using your username and password.
  • If you find your pages changing theme, it means somebody is applying a theme to the whole web and not just their page.
  • Who changed my file? This will be common as we learn. You can right-click on a file in the folder list, select properties, and find out who changed it.  Of course, press F5 first.
